Dances We Teach
At Arthur Murray Studios, we teach our South Orange County students a variety of dances from a mix of categories. Students can choose to focus on a particular dance style such as the waltz, explore an entire category such as ballroom dancing, or mix it up with a little bit of everything. After assessing their skill level, course instructors help students set specific dance goals and choose the styles and level that’s appropriate for them.
We also offer a wide array of Latin dances at our South Orange County Studio in Lake Forest, from the lesser known Paso Doble to the beginner’s favorite: the Merengue. Heat things up with Cuban style steps from the Rumba or Cha Cha. Really feel the music studying the Mambo and then expand your repertory with Bolero, which acts as a perfect bridge between the Mambo and Rumba while offering its own distinct twists. Similarly, the Samba brings history of Brazilian, Cuban, and German dances, while the ever popular Salsa brings Columbia and Puerto Rico together in an adaptable, fun and fast paced dance, perfect for a variety of social settings.
Country Western Dances
Students who want to focus on American country classics will love our western dance styles. From the Texas Two-step to the Progressive Two-step and Country Western Waltz, we explore how ballroom dances evolved in the wild west. Country Swing, Country Shuffle, and the Country Triple all give our capable instructors an opportunity to break down complex styles and steps into a basic foundation that leaves students feeling confident enough to explore the dance floor. We also teach the West Coast Swing, already mentioned in the Swing Dance category.
Our ballroom dances exemplify what most would consider classic smooth and standard dancing. Twentieth Century ballroom dances like the Foxtrot and the Quickstep are still loved and performed everywhere, and the Waltz and Viennese Waltz have definitely stood the test of time. The Tango is another ballroom favorite embraced by casual and professional dancers everywhere. These dances exude elegance and grace; dancers glide across the dance floor with relatively fixed upper body positioning.
Swing & Rhythm Dances
From coast to coast, Swing took the country by storm and continues to be a favorite. We teach both East Coast and West Coast varieties as well as the Jive, Lindy Hop, Hustle, and Jitterbug. These highly energetic dances provide a base in rhythm that can extend into all other dance forms. Being easy to pick up, these dances put the focus on fun. But as they build experience, students can attempt more difficult moves in dances like the Jitterbug or Lindy Hop.
At Arthur Murray, we also teach a number of specialty dances which cannot be classified by any one style or culture. These mixed step dances bring together styles of multiple cultures and times to bring a new flavor to the established foundations. The Argentine Tango, Nightclub Two-Step, Bachata, and Zouk call to the passionate dancer and give more experienced students a new challenge to tackle.
Different Levels And Goals
At Arthur Murray Dance Studios, we teach South Orange County dancers of all ages and levels. Even novice dancers can start by taking the most basic classes, then eventually mastering a variety of dances for social occasions or pure enjoyment. We have you covered whether you want to dance socially, learn for a special event, or break into competitive dance.
Sometimes, you can’t avoid the spotlight. Wedding couples find themselves not only pressured into taking to the dance floor but at center stage on their special day. It’s no surprise then that one of our most popular programs is Wedding Dancing. Couples about to tie the knot and even their guests will come to us for lessons in the weeks before the big day, or drop in at the last minute for a few basic sessions. Our instructors can also work with them to design a customized dance routine for their special song.
Dancers thinking about taking a more serious interest in dancing will love our silver and gold programs. The silver program focuses on styling and trains dancers in more elaborate movements to help serious hobby dancers stand out on the dance floor. At the gold level, we turn that hobby into performance with a focus on choreography and showmanship. Instructors take styling and technique to a professional level, polishing everything from steps to stage presence. Class time is used to practice and perfect moves into competition-ready routines.
Social dancers merely want to be comfortable dancing in any social setting, should the need arise. If you have ever been uncomfortable at a party with a DJ, or at a club, you may want to have a professional instructor show you a few things to get you started. Arthur Murray understands exactly how you feel, and we are happy to put together a simple dance program for you to gain that confidence you’ve always wanted. In no time at all, you will be out on the dance floor, getting loose like everyone else.
