Dances We Teach
The dances in this category are ballroom classics that feature flowing, smooth lower body movements and de-emphasize upper body movements. Two of the dances we teach, the Tango and the Foxtrot, are intended for a standard 4/4 time signature. In addition, we teach two ballroom mainstays performed in 3/4 time, the Waltz and the Vienna Waltz. We round out or selection of smooth and standard dances with the lighter, faster Quickstep.
Swing & Rhythm Dances
Hip, arm and knee movements are the key to the six dances found in this always popular category. Bring back memories of the big band jazz era with any of our five swing styles: the Jitterbug, Jive, Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing. Or take a turn under the mirror ball with our partnered version of the disco classic, the Hustle.
Our full slate of Latin dance styles includes four popular ballroom steps: the Cha-Cha, Samba, Paso Doble and Rumba. It also includes four less formal crowd pleasers: the Salsa, Merengue, Mambo and Bolero. Whether for formal settings or the weekend dance floor, all of these styles have common roots in the traditions of South and Central America. In addition, all of the Latin dances place a premium on rhythmic flair and energetic self-expression.
Country Western Dances
Country western music and country western dance have grown up together throughout America’s rich history. And almost anywhere you live, you’ll find plenty of opportunity to take one of the treasured styles we teach to your local club, dancehall or private party. Choose from the Country Swing, Country Triple, Texas Two-Step, Country Western Waltz, West Coast Swing, Country Shuffle and Progressive Two-Step.
A specialty dance is a dance created from diverse stylistic elements instead of elements drawn from just a single tradition. At Arthur Murray, we teach popular, polished versions of these steps that have a solid history on the dance floor. Available options include the Argentine Tango, Nightclub Two-Step, Zouk and Bachata.
Reasons for Taking Dance Lessons
Dancing at a Wedding
At weddings large and small, dancing is often a favored activity for guests, family members and the happy couple. If you don’t dance regularly, you may want to polish up your skills (or develop new skills) with the help of an expert. You may have an even greater need for expert instruction if the plans for an upcoming wedding include any type of themed dancing or formal dancing.
It might seem strange to take organized lessons in order to learn a casual dance style. However, the fact is, even casual styles require you control your body and make certain sequences of moves. Dance newcomers, in particular, may need expert help to simplify the learning process. And even if you have experience with one type of dance, your current skills won’t necessarily translate well to learning a new step on your own.
In the past few years, dance competitions have popped up all over network and cable TV. However, long before these television trends took shape, experienced dancers were sharpening their competitive skills with rigorous advanced lessons. In addition, some dance newcomers set their sights on gaining competition-level skills from the very beginning, and lay out their long-term lesson plans accordingly.
Dancing at Special Events
If you attend a special event like a high school reunion, charity ball or anniversary party, you may find that dancing is an expected or required part of your participation. For beginners, lessons with a qualified instructor are the best possible option for learning the details of an unfamiliar dance style for an upcoming event. In fact, even experienced dancers can pick up important pointers by attending a few classes.
The Arthur Murray Method
At Arthur Murray, we have a multi-pronged approach to dance instruction. First, we start you with an introductory lesson designed to familiarize you with some of the most fundamental movements in the language of dance. In the next phase of the process, you have the opportunity to consult with an instructor and develop your own customized training plan. Focus your plan around the short-term development of basic dance competence. Or, if you prefer, take a longer view and structure your plan around the development of competition-worthy abilities. The choice is entirely up to you.
Arthur Murray is known nationwide as a trustworthy standard for high-quality dance education. That’s because we hire only top-quality instructors who know how to seamlessly combine fun and learning. Whether you come to the world of dance with no prior experience or want to sharpen or expand your previously gained skills, you’ll find that we support you from your first day of class to your final visit.
