Dances We Teach
The smooth and standard category includes definitive ballroom styles such as the Foxtrot, Tango, Waltz and Vienna Waltz. It also includes a faster-paced style called the Quickstep. We teach all five of these dances, which place an emphasis on lower body movements that let you flow elegantly across the floor. Three of the smooth and standard steps are performed at a 4/4 tempo, while the Waltz and Vienna Waltz feature a 3/4 tempo.
Swing & Rhythm Dances
The six high-energy dances in our swing and rhythm category have enjoyed enduring popularity on dance floors across the country. Five of these six styles — the Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Jive and Jitterbug — are true swing dances that first served as accompaniments for big band jazz performances. The non-swing Hustle comes to us from the days of disco. We teach a partnered version of this dance.
At Arthur Murray, we teach timeless Latin dances suitable for the ballroom or the dance floor. Ballroom steps we feature include the Rumba, Paso Doble, Samba and Cha-Cha. Our dance floor-ready options include the Merengue, Bolero, Mamba and Salsa. No matter which style you choose, you’ll find yourself rooted in the rich, self-expressive and high-energy dance heritage of Central and South America.
Country Western Dances
The traditions of country western dance extend all the way back to the earliest days of American history. And to this day, steps in this category continue to inspire dancehall and honky tonk adventures across the country. We teach a diverse selection of these time-honored dances, including the Country Western Waltz, Progressive Two-Step, Country Shuffle, West Coast Swing, Texas Two-Step, Country Swing and Country Triple.
Specialty dances are the elegant mash-ups of the dance world. Instead of developing from the roots of a single tradition, they draw on several distinctive elements and combine them into a unified whole. At Arthur Murray, our slate of specialized dance instruction includes the Nightclub Two-Step, Bachata, Zouk and Argentine Tango.
Reasons for Taking Dance Lessons
Dancing at a Wedding
Whether you’re attending or hosting an upcoming wedding, dancing probably looms large on your agenda. Some wedding plans call for you to perform certain styles of dance, while others are more loosely organized and let you cut a rug as you see fit. In either situation, a few sessions with a professional instructor can improve your current abilities or provide you with new abilities that help you shine on the special day.
For some people, casual dancing is anything but casual. In fact, insecurity about dancing in public can potentially limit your social opportunities or contribute to self-confidence issues. Even experienced dancers may feel anxious about performing new and unfamiliar casual steps. Whether you’re a beginner or a dancer wishing to expand your skills, lessons from a trained instructor can provide major short- and long-term benefits.
Dance competitions have now become a staple of modern American life. While many of these competitions take place on TV and are only open to a small group of dancers, open events also take place regularly throughout the country. If you’re just starting out in dance, you may decide to gear your long-term coursework toward the development of competition-level skills. You may also decide to switch over to competition mode after first developing basic skills in a more casual setting.
Dancing at Special Events
Even if you never attend a wedding, chances are pretty good that you’ll someday attend a special event that features dancing as a main activity. Examples of this type of event include charity fundraisers, high school reunions, anniversary parties and balls. In some cases, you may need to learn an unfamiliar step in order to participate fully. And even if you have some dance experience, a few sessions with an instructor can help you brush up your abilities.
The Arthur Murray Method
The Arthur Murray method begins with an introductory lesson that focuses on the most fundamental elements of dance and prepares you for further class participation. After finishing this lesson, you have complete freedom to decide what to do next. If you like, you can create a long-term plan that will allow you to master your chosen dance(s), and even take part in organized competitions. On the other hand, you can also create a short-term plan that only contains enough lessons to give you the confidence to perform a single step in a club, honky tonk or other public setting.
No matter what style of dance tickles your fancy, you can find the professional instruction you need at Arthur Murray. For more than a century, we’ve provided America’s most reliable combination of expert teaching and fun, interactive learning environments. Regardless of your skill level or aspirations, we know what it takes to support your journey as a dance enthusiast.
