Dances We Teach

We teach a wide range of dance styles that are sure to suit any taste. Whether you are looking to glide across the dance floor like a silver screen icon, spice things up with a Latin vibe, or scoot across a country western dance floor, we have a class you’ll love. We offer classes in Smooth and Standard Dances, Latin, Swing and Rhythm, Country Western and Specialty dance styles.

Latin Dances

Latin Dance hails from Central and South America, where indigenous people danced out of celebration and community. You will recognize Latin Dance for its passionate tempos and exciting opportunity for self-expression. Today, Latin Dance includes different types of ballroom and social dance styles. In the Ballroom category, we teach the Rumba, Samba, Cha-Cha and Paso Doble. Social styles we teach include the Salsa, Bolero, Mambo and Merengue.

Country Western Dances

Country music ushered in Country Western Dance, brought to America by European settlers. Country Western Dance is informal. Since the proper attire includes cowboy boots, the steps mimic flat-footed, gliding movements. Country Western Dance is often a partner dance, including the Country Swing, the West Coast Swing, the Country Western Waltz, the Progressive Two-Step, the Texas Two-Step, the Country Shuffle and the Country Triple.

Ballroom Dances

Your classic Ballroom styles are in the Smooth and Standard Dance family. These dances are recognizable for their sophisticated steps and graceful movements, often portrayed in more formal settings or as a competitive dance. Arthur Murray teaches these dances, which feature rigid upper body postures, such as the Tango, the Waltz, the Viennese Waltz, the Foxtrot, and the lighter Quickstep.

Swing & Rhythm Dances

With origins in the swing jazz music styles of New York in the 1920’s, it is no wonder that these dances naturally incorporate quick legwork, twirls, hip movements and energetic acrobatics. Making their way across the country to California, Swing and Rhythm Dances picked up influence from beach culture. Swing dances we teach include the East Coast Swing, the West Coast Swing, the Jitterbug, the Jive and the Lindy Hop. We also teach the Hustle, a Rhythm Dance with roots in Disco.

Specialty Dances

The Specialty Dances that we teach in Rancho Bernardo include Argentine Tango, the Bachata, the Nightclub Two-Step and the Zouk. These dances include rhythms from Latin America and Africa, and include steps like those found in Ballroom Dance with energetic body movements. These dances draw influences from around the globe, and are therefore considered “fusion-style” dances.

Reasons To Take Dance Classes

Wedding Dances

There can be a lot of pressure around the “big day,” but don’t let dance be a burden on your celebration! Arthur Murray can help you learn some basic, classic steps or help you tailor and choreograph an intricate production for your “first dance.” Either way, with the skills and style that you gain with us, you will look effortless on the dance floor, so you can focus on having fun with your guests instead of feeling nervous about dancing. Our instruction is also sought out by guests of the bride and groom, who don’t want to be wallflowers on this important day.

Casual Dancing

If you can move, you can dance! Casual dancing is for people who would like to feel more comfortable in social settings, like a club or honky tonk. After your first lesson with one of our encouraging, highly-trained instructors, you will find that dance movements actually come natural to you. You can dance with your hands, your eyes, your head, your whole body and Arthur Murray is here to give you the results you need in a short amount of time. Our Casual Dance offerings are a quick and affordable way to introduce dance into your life.

Competitive Dancing

Whether you walk into Arthur Murray with a solid dance groundwork or are coming to us as a new dancer, everyone has the potential to develop the skills and mindset needed for competition. Dancing competitively is fun, and challenging. We will meet you where you are and help you build on your skill level. We offer class programs designed to push you to your greatest potential. These classes are typically longer, as competitive dancing takes extensive practice. You can focus on one or several dance styles.

What to Expect from Your Dance Lessons

There are countless reasons to dance. Arthur Murray welcomes dancers of all levels and interests to the dancefloor. You pick the style of dance that speaks to you and our expert instructors will do what it takes to get you to the level you desire. Our introductory classes begin with step-by-step instruction, which we will slowly build upon as your comfort improves. With basic steps under your belt, you can work with your instructor to tailor a training plan to get you to your goal. Our instructors are passionate about teaching dance. We promise it will improve your quality of life.

We have a graduated medal system from beginner to advanced that has become the industry standard for dance training. We offer flexible scheduling, so it is easier for you to fit in your daily or weekly (or even monthly) dance lesson. Our social events enable you to relax and unwind, while putting into practice all of the new skills you have learned. As you grow in your ability, you will find new ways and opportunities to express yourself through dance. Some of our students even move on to become professionals.
