Dance Styles We Teach

Latin Dances

Latin dances are a group of beloved ballroom and social dance styles that feature rhythmic intensity and a joyous sense of self-expression. They have their origin in a number of Central and South American cultures. Ballroom styles we teach in this category include the Rumba, Samba, Cha-Cha and Paso Doble. We also teach the Salsa, Bolero, Mambo and Merengue.

Swing & Rhythm Dances

Swing Dancing lessons at Arthur Murray Dance StudioThe swing and rhythm family of dance styles get their name from their shared reliance on rhythmic hip, knee and arm movements. Most of the dances in the category qualify as swing dances, and have their roots in the swing jazz music styles that first emerged in the U.S. in the 1920s. Specific swing dances we teach include the East Coast Swing, the West Coast Swing, the Jitterbug, the Jive and the Lindy Hop. The final member of this family of styles is the Hustle, a rhythm dance created in the disco era.

Ballroom Dances

Ballroom Dancing taught at Arthur Murray Dance StudioThe smooth and standard family of dances includes several of the most classic ballroom styles, including the Tango, the Waltz, the Viennese Waltz and the Foxtrot. It also includes a somewhat lighter ballroom dance called the Quickstep. All smooth and standard dances are distinguished by their reliance on a series of flowing, elegant steps that feature minimal upper body movement. The Waltz and the faster-paced Viennese Waltz both feature a distinctive 3/4 tempo.

Country Western Dances

Country western dances have their roots in country music, the older western music genre and the songs brought to America by early European settlers. Popular country western partner dances taught at Arthur Murray’s Long Beach studio include the Country Swing, the West Coast Swing, the Country Western Waltz, the Progressive Two-Step, the Texas Two-Step, the Country Shuffle and the Country Triple.

Specialty Dances

Reasons to take Dance Classes

Casual Dancing

learn to dance in social settingsSome people just want to pick up a few basic dance moves so they can participate more fully in social events, or join the fun at the local club or honky tonk. If you’re a casual enthusiast, you want solid results without dedicating a lot of time to the learning process. You also want to avoid spending money unnecessarily on a longer dance course.

Dancing at a Wedding

learn to dance for your weddingFor some people, dance lessons are an important prelude to participation in a single memorable event: a wedding. If you’re preparing for your big day, you also may just need to learn a few steps, especially if you prefer to perform an informal dance at your wedding. However, your focus may shift to more formal dance styles that suit a traditional wedding environment.

Dancing at Special Events

Other types of rare or festive occasions also frequently call for solid dance skills. Examples of these special events include reunions, balls or galas, cruise ship trips and bar/bat mitzvahs. The type of dance you need to learn for a special occasion may vary according to specific event. No matter which dance style is on the agenda, professional training will set you on the right course.

Competitive Dancing

dance competitively among other dancersSome people who already have a solid foundation in dance decide to build on their skill set in order to participate in organized competitions. In addition, some new dance enthusiasts know early on that they eventually want to develop competition-level abilities. If you fall into either one of these categories, you’ll usually sign up for a longer program of classes, or take an advanced course that focuses on one style or several related styles. Ballroom dancers are especially prone to developing the competition bug.

The Arthur Murray Method

No matter which style of dance interests you, or your reasons for learning how to dance, the expert instructors at Arthur Murray Studios start with an introductory lesson designed to expose you to some of the most basic beginner steps. After completing this lesson, you can work with your instructor to establish a training program that supports your specific goals and ambitions. You can easily focus on just a few steps to a single dance, and quickly learn enough to hit the floor at a Long Beach-area club, dance hall or honky tonk. You can also choose a longer course of instruction that lets you build up your dancing proficiency at a gradual pace. If competition is what you seek, we can tailor an advanced training program to your preferred style of dance.

Arthur Murray has a well-deserved reputation as the gold standard in affordable, high-quality dance instruction. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student, you will always receive training from a professional teacher who knows dance inside and out. Just as importantly, our instructors specialize in communicating their extensive knowledge in a fun, inspiring fashion that instills confidence and lets you know you’re firmly on the path to dancing competence and, eventually, dancing mastery.
